Why Tractable?

We combine world-class AI research with real-world applications that make a difference. At Tractable, you’ll collaborate with brilliant minds, work on transformative projects, and contribute to technology that helps people when they need it most.

About the role

We are looking for a highly skilled, hands-on Lead Electro-Mechanical Assembly Technician to help build LumaScanner units at our Salt Lake City facility. This is a player-coach role: you will personally assemble, wire, test, and troubleshoot complex scanner systems while guiding a small production team and helping us create repeatable, high-quality build processes.

Initially, you will work alongside and lead a small team of assembly technicians. As production grows, the role can expand into broader responsibility for production planning, quality systems, and team leadership. The right person combines strong practical technical ability with the discipline to document work, train others, and continuously improve how the product is built.

What you’ll do

Build and integrate complete scanner systems: Perform hands-on mechanical assembly, electrical wiring, cable routing, sensor and camera installation, embedded-computer setup, and final finishing of production units.

Test and troubleshoot: Run functional tests and diagnostic procedures; identify and resolve electrical, mechanical, networking, camera, sensor, and software-integration issues before shipment.

Lead by example: Coordinate the daily work of a small assembly team, assign tasks, answer technical questions, and step in wherever needed to keep builds moving.

Train and develop technicians: Teach assembly methods, safe tool use, wiring and crimping practices, test procedures, and quality expectations. Provide clear feedback and verify that work is completed correctly.

Own final build verification: Ensure each completed system is fully functional, accurately configured, properly documented, and ready for shipment. Maintain practical inspection, test, and sign-off checklists.

Create repeatable build processes: Document assembly steps, wiring practices, configuration procedures, and test methods. Improve existing instructions and close process gaps as the product and team evolve.

Improve buildability and quality: Work closely with Hardware R&D and Field Installation teams to identify recurring issues, simplify assembly, improve serviceability, and prevent installation or field failures.

Support shop operations: Help manage parts and tools, perform cycle counts, receive and organize deliveries, package completed systems, and maintain an orderly production area.

Contribute to supplier quality: Inspect incoming parts, document fit or quality problems, and provide practical feedback to Supply Chain and local suppliers.

Maintain safe and disciplined work practices: Promote safe assembly, material handling, ESD protection, correct tool use, and consistent workspace organization.

What we’re looking for

Core requirements

Strong hands-on experience: 5+ years in electro-mechanical assembly, manufacturing, prototype build, field service, or a closely related technical role.

Technical leadership: Experience as a lead technician, senior assembler, shop lead, manufacturing technician, or similar player-coach role. Formal people-management experience is helpful but not required.

Electrical and mechanical capability: Able to read wiring diagrams, schematics, assembly drawings, and bills of materials; skilled with hand tools, torque tools, crimpers, ferrule tools, multimeters, and light soldering.

Troubleshooting ability: Comfortable diagnosing systems that combine power distribution, embedded computers, USB and Ethernet devices, cameras, sensors, and mechanical structures.

Computer proficiency: Comfortable using Windows and Linux, running command-line scripts, flashing firmware, configuring devices, and recording test results.
